Norwich Kung Fu Academy opposes all forms of unlawful and unfair discrimination or victimisation. We aim to provide equal opportunities and fairness for all in employment and service delivery.
No employee, worker, contractor, student, or job applicant will receive less favourable treatment, be disadvantaged, or harassed on the basis of a protected characteristic: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin), religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.
Recruitment, selection, development, promotion, and all terms and conditions of employment will be based on merit, aptitude, and ability.
This policy applies to all employees (permanent, fixed-term, and temporary), workers, contractors, applicants, and students in connection with the Academy's services.
The policy operates in accordance with applicable equality legislation and relevant statutory Codes of Practice and guidance, including those issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and Government departments.
We do not tolerate instructors being harassed by third parties (including students) in relation to protected characteristics. Affected employees should inform a director immediately. The Academy will investigate and take reasonable steps to prevent recurrence.
We attach particular importance to meeting the needs of disabled people.
We will make reasonable adjustments to support disabled employees and applicants, including training, assistive equipment, or adjustments to hours or duties.
Disabled people will be included in training and development programmes.
We will give full and proper consideration to disabled applicants, taking reasonable adjustments into account in assessing aptitude and ability.
We will collect and analyse relevant data (for employees and students, as appropriate) including gender, marital or civil partnership status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability, recruitment, promotion, access to training, and participation in grievance, disciplinary, and bullying/harassment procedures.
Data will be treated confidentially and used only for monitoring and improvement.
We will assess the impact of policies and services where appropriate and develop action plans if under-representation or unequal progression is identified, including reviewing procedures and considering lawful positive action.
This policy and related arrangements will be reviewed at least annually and whenever there are significant organisational changes.
Employees may raise complaints about discrimination, harassment, or victimisation through the Academy's Grievance and Harassment Procedures. Interim arrangements apply where procedures are being developed.
Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or victimisation will be treated as disciplinary offences and be delt with accordingly.
This policy is approved and fully supported by the Directors.

This risk assessment is implemented and monitored by the Chief Instructors, Mark Ringer and William Bridgman, who are responsible for ensuring appropriate control measures are in place before, during and after every training session.
These are the steps in our risk assessment we undertake prior to each lesson. If any of the risks are noted, steps will be taken to remove or minimize the noted risk.
Is the training area large enough to accommodate the number of students?
Specific exercises being practiced can be changed according to the number of students training in the area available.
Is the area safe from incidental physical hazards i.e. Spillages leaking roof, loose fittings, foreign objects (broken glass, wood, metal) bare electrical wiring etc?
Visual inspection of the area, ensuring that all hazards are made safe. If safety from incidental hazards cannot be rectified training should be either adjusted accordingly or cancelled. Where appropriate, report faults to the venue management.
Is the temperature too hot or cold?
Adjust heating and/or ventilation accordingly.
Is the lighting adequate?
Adjust accordingly. Report any faults to the venue management.
Is there a fire risk?
Unauthorised persons entering the training area.
An instructor will always be in position to see the door. One instructor should always engage unknown persons.
To avoid students colliding with one another, ensure that students have adequate room to move. Use of spacing dots to be used where possible.
Avoiding horseplay and taking of unnecessary risks.
Ensure that all students are aware of the behaviour requirements. Immediately stop the training if any student is behaving inappropriately and speak to those concerned in private.
Unauthorised persons/students instructing.
The only people who are to instruct are those authorised to do so by either chief instructor.
Tiredness / Fatigue.
Students can become physically and mentally tired during training. This could be due to a number of factors including lack of physical conditioning, hunger, dehydration. Continually monitor the group and provide breaks/less energetic drills where necessary. Any student showing signs of fatigue should be given the chance to rest.
Repetitive Strain Injury.
Constant repetition of technique may cause discomfort – especially wrist, elbow, shoulder and knee. All techniques should be practiced without any excessive pressure. Monitor how often students are repeating techniques.
Pregnant women
Pregnant women should only take part in physical activities having taken advice from their medical practitioner.
Use of training mats
Mats move. It is not uncommon for mats to slip out of position creating gaps that can cause injury from trips. Mat corners can rise creating a risk of tripping. Mats are not to be used except in exceptional circumstances with advanced students.
Training in bare feet
This can create a higher risk of injury to the bare footed student. It is not realistic and trains students to perform techniques inaccurately. Creates an unnecessary personal hygiene issue. Students are only to train in bare feet when no alternative is available and with their acceptance of the risks.
Training in socks
This creates an unacceptable risk of slipping and is not allowed.
Injury from cold muscles
Ensure that all lesson plans include a drill that will allow the warming of appropriate muscles by gentle movement.
Improper Supervision
Ensure that a suitable ratio of student to qualified instructors is enforced at all times. This ratio will vary according to the type of training.
Injury from stretching
All stretches should be done slowly and carefully at the time, and in the manner instructed. If any injury or discomfort is experienced by a student, they should stop the stretch immediately and inform an instructor. The only stretching that will be done in training will be that which encourages full joint mobility without unnecessary straining.

The chief instructors of the Norwich Kung Fu Academy are Mark Ringer and William Bridgman.
Participation in all classes, assessments and workshops run by Norwich Kung Fu Academy, is with the strict acceptance of, and adherence to, the following health and safety policy.
Your co-operation is not merely appreciated, but is also essential to the enjoyment and personal development of all academy members.
The health, safety, and welfare of everyone in the class is everybody's responsibility.
At the Norwich Kung Fu Academy we believe that good behaviour is not simply about following rules. It is an essential part of learning Kung Fu.
Our aim is to help every student develop the qualities that martial arts seek to cultivate:
We recognise that children develop at different rates and arrive with different personalities, levels of maturity and individual needs. Mistakes are treated as opportunities to learn and improve. Our goal is not simply to stop unwanted behaviour, but to help every student develop the self-discipline, confidence and awareness that will benefit them both inside and outside the training hall.
Positive behaviour is recognised and encouraged through praise, responsibility and opportunities to progress. We believe children learn best when appropriate behaviour is acknowledged, while inappropriate behaviour is addressed calmly, consistently and fairly.
We believe children make the greatest progress when instructors and parents work together.
Parents and guardians are warmly encouraged to remain and observe lessons. We believe this helps parents understand how we teach, appreciate their child's progress, and strengthens the partnership between home and the academy. Parents are welcome to sit in the designated viewing area throughout the lesson.
We also understand that this is not always practical. Children may be dropped off and collected for their lesson, provided they are of an age and maturity appropriate for this arrangement.
Parents and guardians remain responsible for supervising their children before lessons begin and after lessons have finished. Children should not be left at the venue until an instructor is present and the lesson is ready to start, and they should be collected promptly at the end of class.
If a child has any medical, behavioural or emotional needs that may affect their participation, we ask that parents discuss these with an instructor so that we can provide appropriate support.
Children attend Norwich Kung Fu Academy because they wish to learn Kung Fu. Learning requires concentration, respect and self-control—qualities that develop through patient practice.
When a student's behaviour prevents either themselves or others from learning safely and effectively, instructors will help them refocus. The following steps provide a general framework. Depending on the student's age, understanding and the circumstances, instructors may adapt this approach or move directly to a later step where safety requires.
1. Gentle Reminder
The instructor gains the student's attention using subtle visual or verbal prompts and redirects their focus back to the activity.
2. Positive Redirection
The instructor approaches the student and calmly explains what they should be doing, focusing on positive guidance rather than criticism.
3. Individual Conversation
If the behaviour continues, the student may be spoken to a short distance away from the group. The instructor will establish whether there is a problem, ensure the student understands what is expected, and help them prepare to rejoin the lesson successfully.
4. Separation Where Appropriate
If the behaviour involves another student or continues to disrupt the class, one or more students may be moved to allow training to continue safely and effectively.
5. Reflection and Return
Where necessary, the student may spend a short period observing from the side of the class while the instructor helps them consider:
The emphasis is always on helping the student regain focus rather than on punishment.
Where behaviour presents an immediate risk to the safety of the student or others, instructors will intervene immediately and may omit earlier steps where appropriate.
Where behaviour repeatedly prevents safe participation or learning, instructors will discuss the matter with parents or guardians so that we can work together to support the student's development.
To help everyone learn safely and enjoy their training, students are expected to:
Our aim is not simply to manage behaviour but to teach self-discipline.
Every correction, every challenge and every success is intended to help students develop the qualities that traditional Kung Fu seeks to cultivate: respect, focus, resilience, confidence, humility and self-control.
By working together with students and parents, we hope that these qualities continue to benefit our students long after they leave the training hall.
Please go through these with your child and ensure that they have an understanding of them appropriate for their age.
Enrolment of your child in classes run by Norwich Kung Fu Academy presupposes that you understand and are happy to support the Norwich Kung Fu Academy in applying this policy.
